Why we made The Talking Jesus Doll
Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6
My wife and I raised three beautiful girls whose favorite companions in their formative years were plush toys. Between the three of them, they accumulated over 300 dolls (that's them below). They played with them at home, took them everywhere they went, and slept with them every night. Years later, they still remember who gave it to them, or where they got it. These toys were the milestones of their childhood.
But as I looked back on those years, something struck me. While many of those toys had sentimental value, and some had educational value, not a single one had spiritual value. Not one pointed our girls toward Jesus.
That nagged at me.
Parents spend tens of billions of dollars every year on educational toys — tools to help their children learn their ABC's and 123's at an early age. It makes sense that parents who want their children to develop educationally would invest the tools early to build a strong foundation. The same is true of Christianity. Exposure to the love and teachings of Jesus in those earliest years is how a child builds a foundation that lasts a lifetime.
As a father in a Christian family, I was disappointed in myself. Why hadn't I given my kids a Jesus doll that recites scripture? A close companion that would also plant the seeds of God's Word in their critical formative years.
I went to buy one and realized - that product didn't exist.

I looked into it and found that there were actually very few plush Jesus dolls on the market. Lots of Baby Jesus, but babies don't really talk and they aren't that interesting. The vast majority were quite intimidating to put it nicely. None had a loving, welcoming appearance like I imagine Jesus does. And none talked.
It seemed like a good idea. Someone should make it. I filed it away in the "maybe someday" section of my mind, alongside a thousand other great ideas. But, I couldn't shake it.
I thought about Jesus dolls day and night. On a work call — sketching design concepts in the margins. Shopping online? No, researching customs regulations. Listening to music? No, it was a global sourcing podcast. The idea followed me everywhere like one of my daughters' stuffed animals they refused to leave the house without.
I began to get the feeling like I was supposed to make it - even though I never made a toy before. I knew God gave me a unique skill set of creativity, art, business acumen and tech savvy. What was that odd combo for? Was this my calling?
Then Covid happened. The world got loud and confusing. Culture wars raged and kids were caught in the crossfire. More than ever, children needed something true to hold onto — a rock foundation in a torrential downpour (Luke 6:46-49). Instilling God's truths before the World tries to corrupt their minds.
I prayed for God to lead, and I promised I'd follow. And at some point — I just knew. This was what I was supposed to do. That conviction moved from my head to my hands. The idea became a calling. The calling became action. Let's gooooo!!!
So, I wanted the doll to be warm, approachable, and beautiful — a face that radiates the love and welcome of Christ. The material had to be super soft, made with real quality, the kind of thing a child reaches for at bedtime. Most importantly, the voice had to be soft enough for a little boy or girl — but clear enough that the words of scripture would settle into a child's memory through sheer, beautiful repetition.
I knew the power of that repetition. As a young boy, I remember my Dad saying prayers at night — specifically the Lord's Prayer. Over and over, night after night. That repetition permanently seared it into my brain. The Talking Jesus Doll could do that for every child — put the words of Jesus into the rhythm of their daily life, woven into the hours of play and sleep and wonder that shape who they become.
Raising Christian kids isn't easy in today's world. Grand/parents need all the help they can get. That's why we made The Talking Jesus Doll. To plant the love and lessons of Jesus Christ in the hearts of our children in their formative years. That is an eternal gift and will be there for your child when they need it most.
