Why we created The Shoebox Jesus Doll for Operation Christmas Child

The Shoebox Jesus Doll didn't start as a product idea. It started as a conversation.

How the Shoebox Jesus Doll Came to Be

We started our company making the Talking Jesus Doll — a 12-inch doll that speaks the words of Jesus. Our mission behind it is simple: introduce children to Jesus in their formative years making disciples of all kids on all nations.

Samaritan's Purse runs Operation Christmas Child — the largest Christmas project of its kind in the world, delivering gift-filled shoeboxes to children in over 100 countries with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Same mission. They do distribution.  We do supply.

When we reached out to Samaritan's Purse about the Talking Jesus Doll, we thought it would be a slam-dunk with our alignment and product.  Turns out, we were wrong.  

The Problem — and the Solution

There were two issues with the Talking Jesus Doll for OCC.

First: it talks. Operation Christmas Child distributes shoeboxes to children worldwide representing over 100 languages. An English-speaking doll doesn't translate.  And there was no way we could make that many versions.  OCC had to say no to audio.

Second: size. The Talking Jesus Doll is 12 inches. Perfect for a hug, but too big for a shoebox.  A standard OCC shoebox is 12 x 7 x 4.38 inches. The doll barely fit in the box leaving no room for anything else.

So we went back to the drawing board and did something nobody else has ever done - to make a doll fit in a shoebox.  Our supplier didn't understand at first.  But after some design sessions, we had it prototyped. 

The result: we designed a 10-inch plush Jesus. No voice. No batteries. No small parts. Soft enough for a toddler, meaningful enough for a teenager. Filled with beads for a sensory feeling.  Double stitched for durability.  And, it is sized to fit perfectly inside any OCC shoebox with room for school supplies, hygiene items, and everything else a child needs. 

Same warm smile.  Same outstretched arms.  Any age. Any gender. Any country.

When we donated Shoebox Jesus Dolls to Operation Christmas Child, Franklin Graham, CEO of Samaritan's Purse, wrote back personally:

That letter is the proof. Not a form response. A personal note from the man who runs the world's largest Christmas mission — saying the doll works, the children love it, and the partnership matters.
